Day 2! Five sightings. Five species. Including melon-headed whales, one of our goal species. We encountered a group of about 350 melon-headed whales and deployed 2 Dtags, one each on separate animals. As luck would have it, our first tag popped off the animal early and had some recording issues. But the second tag stayed on well for about 30 min. We recorded whistles, echolocation clicks and dive patterns, all to be analyzed soon. This was also the first Dtag of a melon-headed whale! In the photo, you can see the tag on the whale just next to the dorsal fin. (Photo by Greg Schorr, Cascadia Research Collective taken under NMFS permit no. 15530)
